Assessment Types


There are numerous forms of tests that are available for a psychologist or counselor to use to identify what level a person is at in relation to their peers. There assessment that look at your intellectual abilities. There are tests that assist in projecting a future career. That are test that can aid in establishing learning disabilities. The main forms of these test are batteries and Standard Achievement Test. each are the assessor to gauge their client in the most helpful ways.

Multiple Aptitude Test Batteries

Multiple Aptitude Test Batteries are a development of subtests that are set to establish multiple proclivities at a single time. This form of testing is used in business and industry settings as well as military training. The scoring of these tests in not a single score, but rather a series of category scores and are used for comparison to other students. Various batteries assess numerical aptitude, mechanical reasoning, and spatial reasoning. All of these tests are geared towards vocational and educational counseling. An example of the Multiple Aptitude Test Battery Testing is the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery. It was formally created in 1960 to assess the comprehension, electronic information, auto and shop , and mechanical comprehension by the Department of Defense and is the military’s entrance exam for employment determination. The test consists of eight subjects; science, math, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, electronic information, auto and shop and mechanical comprehension (N., 2013).

Specialized Aptitude Tests

Specialized Aptitude Tests are used to test a single aptitude such as clerical abilities, artistic talents, or motor dexterity. Limitations presented in this form of testing are they

primarily focused on only one specific task. When testing clerical abilities, a specialized test would look at calculation, checking, coding, filling, keyboarding, numerical abilities, and verbal reasoning. When testing mechanical ability, one’s capacity to learn about mechanical objects is assessed. The test looks at tools, devices, home repairs, sand objects. In addition; it covers spatial reasoning. Artistic ability is assessed by judgment and perception. These forms of tests are now rarely offered and not frequently offered by commercial industries (“How Aptitude Tests Measure What Students Are Capable of Doing,” n.d.).

Admissions Tests

Admissions tests are common place amongst higher levels of education. In this form of testing, a student would take a test that would cover writing, verbal, analytical reasoning, and specific knowledge. Depending upon the college cut-off score, will determine whether a student would be accepted. In practical use of the Admissions Test, public and state schools will only accept the best potential students, however as colleges become more business oriented placement test are becoming more common place rather than for use as acceptance. With the ever-rising cost in tuition thanks in part by easily obtainable college loans that have loan forgiveness to them and government grant, profiting off of college athletics without pay for the athletes schools have turned into a profit generating industry leading for the need of acceptance testing as a thing of the past. Examples of Admissions Testing would be the SATs and ACTs nearly all colleges accept this form of assessment of student abilities(“Admissions tests,” 2014, “How Aptitude Tests Measure What Students Are Capable of Doing,” n.d.).

Readiness Tests

Readiness Tests is connected with Aptitude Tests by foreseeing a child’s likely success when entering school. Readiness is defined as the necessary preparation for academic success in a school setting with peers. A typical Readiness Test will test the physical and sensory functions, motor skills, growth and overall well bring. Social and emotional age appropriate skills, capacity for learning language ability, cognition and general knowledge (N., 2018).


Achievement Test Batteries

The Achievement batteries test is considered one of the most popular forms of testing in America. It provides the assessors the ability to look at and gauge multiple areas subjected to testing. Often these are comprehensive test that provide a broad look at a curriculum typically covering language, reading, mathematics, and what grade level the student is at. Due to the broad nature in which subjects are tested a limited amount of areas can be honed in on and targets by the assessor. With this in mind it degrades the ability of the assessment to determine if any learning disabilities are prevalent. The reasoning for such testing is to determine what level a student is at in ratio to their peers or possible strengths. This method of testing can be conducted in mass grouping at one time covering multiple subjects broadly in one sitting (Silverman, 1990).

State Achievement Test

State Achievement Tests are tests that are developed by states to assess and standardize a target level that each student should be performing by. These are periodic tests that are given at different grade level and varies state by state. The are criterion-referenced test by design and Assessments Types 4 used to see if a student has met the requirement of theminium standards established by the state. Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, each state is required to develop a form of testing that will gauge the academic level of a student. Though a great advantage of conducting this form of testing shows how a child is performing with in the states and target areas where children are underperforming; this test can not be used to gauge student performance against another state due to the individual state creation mandate (“K-12 Student Assessment,” 2014).

National Assessment of Educational Progress

The National Assessment of Educational Progress is the only national test that can be used to assess where students across the United State range in meeting minimal assigned standards. This test covers Mathematics, reading, science, writing, history, civics, art, and geography. The down side to this form of testing is that it looks only to overall national testing it does not break down individual state levels (About NAEP, n.d.).

Performance Assessment

The Performance Assessment is an assessment where students demonstrate mastery of real-world tasks demonstrating knowledge and skill. Tasks in the assessment are similar to those issues faced in the outside world (“Performance Assessment – an overview | ScienceDirect Topics,” n.d.).

Individual Achievement Test

Individual Achievement Tests are subject-focused individual tests that target one particular area of focus. Often, testing in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics are conducted using this method in broad general assessment. This form or testing can be used to identify strengths and weaknesses that can be enhanced. An assessor can use an Individual Assessments Types 5 Achievement Test in conjunction with Intelligence Test to determine learning disabilities (“[No title],” n.d.).

Diagnostic Testing

Diagnostic Testing is a tool used to identify strengths and weaknesses of a student, then use the strength and weakness found to build curricula or intervention plan around the test takers needs. In relation to an individual achievement test a diagnostic test will provide a narrow scope focus in one particular area. These are often test that often take a considerable amount of time to administer. These tests typically assess a student’s reading abilities but it is not uncommon for them to be use to test mathematics and language. Much like other test in this category, it attempts to assess and identify any potential learning disability. This method of test is used in relation with the Individual with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 which mandates eight areas of achievement be gauges (oral language, basic language, total reading, reading comprehension, and fluency, written expression , mathematics, math fluency, total achievement) Subject Area Test (“Psychological Diagnostic Assessment | Midwest Behavioral Health,” n.d.).

Criterion-Referenced Test

Criterion-Referenced Test is used to ascertain if an individual or group of individuals have arised to a particular level of acceptable performance. Often the successful completion with a minimal score is used for a student to advance to the next level. In this form of testing targeted objectives and skills are determined to see if a student has truly met a specific standard of knowledge. Criterion-Referenced Test focus on multiple items to be measured. The is tes is assessed on an absolute standard in which a percentage of correct answers is determined. The Assessments Types 6 purpose of this form of testing is to evaluate area that should be enriched, to provide counselors with tools in aiding future education or vocational planning, to aide in the creation of curriculum, to show a mastery level of knowledge of tested areas, to identify student progress over time, and to aid in student course selection. An example of this form of testing is the College Basic Academic Subjects Examination. This test identify if college students have master skills and competencies with the established curriculum. Hi, and thank you for joining me on my new site. Here I want to take time to discuss different aspects of Mental Health that I have observed over the last 17 years. Here on this form I will be targeting topic such as personality disorders, Autism, addiction, and other such aspect that effect many of us throughout the course of our lives.
